"An elegant blend of 73/19/5% cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc from 34-year-old vines on Tasmania's East Coast. Light on the herbaceous notes and packed with bright blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry fruits on a bed of fine spice, licorice, olive tapenade, cedar, light tobacco and violet tones. Just a hint of cabernet franc lift with a tug of fine, gravelly tannins lending ample support, the line bright and true. Wonderful, graceful drinking now that will improve over time."
- 95 points. Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

"This is an excellent release. It has power, it has structure and it has excellent length. It’s a cool climate style, in that it feels refreshing, but it also has real presence. It tastes of pencils and blackcurrant, boysenberry and Dutch chocolate, mint and assorted leaf matter. I would argue too that there’s a smidgen of liquorice in the mix here, a flavour I don’t associate with Tasmania or with cabernet. In any case the wine is a class act. Fresh, mid-weight and fascinating in equal measure.”

Just a handful of warm sites around Tasmania, including Freycinet Vineyard, produce excellent Cabernet and Merlot wines. Reminiscent of the Bordeaux region, our cool maritime climate allows us to fully ripen these varieties, creating wines with fine, elegant savoury tannins, worthy of the cellar.

The 2017 was cooler than usual on the east coast of Tasmania, allowing for long, gentle ripening conditions which have imparted elegance and remarkable fruit concentration to the wines, with noticeable intensity of colour in the reds. An excellent vintage across the board.

Mature vines are meticulously hand tended and handpicked, ensuring optimal ripeness. In the winery, fruit is hand sorted and destemmed to ensure fragrance and intensity of flavour.

A unique expression of place, the combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a sprinkling of Cabernet Franc ensures the ideal balance of plush berry fruit, spice and herbaceous, savoury complexity. Deep ruby with a hint of purple, heady aromas of cigar box, cassis and liquorice fill the glass. The supple and harmonious palate melds juicy plums, ripe berries and blackcurrants with liquorice, spice, herbs and black olives which are further complemented by attractively integrated savoury oak. Extended post ferment maceration and long maturation in barriques has allowed for the development of fine, elegant tannins and with a long finish, promising to reward with careful cellaring.
